When and How to Change Your Vape Coil: Everything You Need to Know

With the exception of your e-liquid, your vape coil is the part of your vape that you will need to change out most often. Proper vape coil maintenance keeps your e-liquid tasting great and prevents your coil from causing damage to your vape.

Coils are housed within your vape tank and contain a wick made of a material like cotton. The wicks are what your e-liquid soaks into and when your vape heats up, this e-liquid turns into vapour.

Vape Coil Versus Atomiser

There’s a lot of terminology in vaping and sometimes words are used interchangeably, like vape coils and atomisers. Atomisers are what turn your e-liquid into vapour and they usually hold your e-liquid and coil inside them. However, sometimes coils are listed as atomisers so it can be a bit confusing if you are trying to replace your coil.

Most coils slide right out of your tank so removing and replacing them is as easy as taking one out and popping another one in.

Vape Coil Longevity

How often you change out your coil will depend on different factors, but most people find they have to change it every week or two. If your vapour tastes bad, however, you most likely have a burned-out coil that needs to be replaced.

If the bad taste happens right after you get a new coil, you may not have let the e-liquid saturate the wicking long enough. Chain vaping can prematurely burn out your coil too, so wait at least 20 seconds between puffs.

Other Signs Your Coil Needs to be Replaced

  • Low vapour production even when the battery is charged
  • Gurgling sounds or popping sounds
  • E-liquid that tastes odd or weak

When you change out your coil, it is important to prime it first. Put a few drops of e-liquid into the holes of your atomiser and leave it for a few minutes to soak into the wick. Once you put the coil into your atomiser and fill the tank with liquid, let your vape sit for a further few minutes. The longer you let the e-liquid soak into the coil, the less likely you are to burn out your coil.
